Pre-Installation Survey
Every picture racking installation begins with a detailed survey of the storage space. We assess the floor loading capacity, the clear height, the environmental conditions — temperature, humidity, light levels — and the access requirements for the collection. We also review the collection itself — the range of sizes, weights and media — to ensure the racking is correctly specified for everything it needs to store.
Conservation Specification
All padded surfaces in contact with artwork are specified in inert, acid-free materials appropriate for the collection. Metal finishes are selected for compatibility with the storage environment. For collections with specific conservation requirements — photographs, works on paper, textiles — we work with the client's conservator to ensure the specification meets their requirements.
Installation in Occupied Buildings
Museum and gallery storage installations often take place in occupied buildings with live collections in adjacent spaces. Rackstor UK Ltd installation teams work with the care and discretion required in these environments — dust protection, careful movement of equipment, and coordination with curatorial and conservation staff throughout the installation.
Handover and Training
On completion, we provide a full handover to collection care staff — demonstrating safe operation of the system, load limits, and the correct procedure for accessing and returning works. Written operation and maintenance instructions are provided. Call 0800 654 6955 for a free survey.
