How to choose the right picture racking system
Specifying a picture racking system starts with the collection, not the building. Before a survey we ask clients to gather six pieces of information: (1) the largest framed dimension in the collection, (2) the heaviest single frame weight, (3) total object count and expected growth over 10 years, (4) access frequency — daily curatorial handling versus deep-store archival, (5) environmental controls in the room (RH, temperature, air-quality class), and (6) floor loading capacity in kN/m². As a planning guide: standard mesh panels are typically supplied at 2,000 mm × 1,500 mm, 2,500 mm × 2,000 mm and 3,000 mm × 2,500 mm, with bespoke panels beyond that on request. Sealed-bearing carriages on our mobile picture racking systems are load-rated for typical museum reserve loads of up to around 500 kg per bay, with heavy-duty variants engineered to higher ratings where the collection demands it. Panel pitch (the gap between adjacent sliding panels) is set from the deepest projecting frame in the collection — normally 100–200 mm — to prevent contact during travel. Final sizes, capacities and pitches are always confirmed in writing after the free site survey; we don't publish generic pricing because every picture racking system is quoted against the surveyed collection.
